Transforming the Civic Heart of Heywood

Heywood’s central square is set to undergo a major transformation. Thanks to a £5 million investment, this flagship regeneration project will breathe new life into the town centre — creating an attractive, inclusive and multifunctional public space that serves as a new focal point for the community.

The redesigned civic square will feature new green landscaping, trees, seating areas, and a high-quality paving scheme to encourage dwell time and make the area more welcoming for everyone. Carefully considered lighting, improved access routes, and flexible open space will make it suitable for everyday use as well as markets, performances, and seasonal events.

The aim is to create a space that’s as practical as it is inspirational — improving safety, accessibility and pride of place while supporting the wider regeneration of the town centre. The redesign will also connect key civic buildings and public services, linking them more effectively and encouraging greater use of local amenities.

This project reflects the town’s ambition to create a more vibrant, people-friendly centre that encourages residents to visit more often, stay longer, and feel proud of where they live.
